Preface
At this point, a Virtual Appliance has been created and some Virtual Machines have been added to it. This Virtual Appliance that could be deployed in any Hypervisor in any environment. That's what we call a Virutal Appliance template.
However, there are some variables into a Virtual Appliance that depend directly on the environment, or better, depend on the actual resources of the Physical Infrastructure. The values for these variables only make sense in a specific environment. The definition of these values is what we call the Virutal Appliance template configuration.
| Moving and copying a Virtual Appliance When moving and copying a Virtual Appliance, only the Virtual Appliance template is included in the operation. The template configuration values must be assigned again in the just created appliance. |
There are two resource types that can be configured in a Virtual Appliance template:
- Network resources
- External Storage Resources
To configure the resources for a Virtual Machine, just roll the mouse over the Virtual Machine icon, and click the edit button

| Edit Virtual Machine button The edit Virtual Machine button only appears if the Virtual Machine is stopped. |
Configure Network Resources
Once the Virtual Machine configuration screen is opened, the Network tab lists all the Network Interfaces (NIC) that will be attached to the Virtual Machine:

The available actions to manage the Network Interfaces attached to a Virtual Machine are:
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
|
Create a new NIC for the Virtual Machine |
|
Remove a NIC from the Virtual Machine |
Creating a new Network Interface
To add a NIC to the Virtual machine, click the
button. The following popup appears, showing all the available VLANs in the Virtual Datacenter

| Public IP tab The Public IP tab is only available in Enterprise Edition. |
Assign a private IP address
To assign a private IP address, select the desired VLAN from the left panel of the Private tab, and then the desired IP address.

Assign a public IP address
| Enterprise Edition Functionality This feature is available in Abiquo Enterprise Edition |
To assign a public IP address, select the desired IP address from the IP address list of the Public tab.

| Purchased Public IP addresses The Public IP addresses that appear in the Public tab are the ones that have been configured in the Infrastructure view as explained in Network management page. |
Configure External Storage resources
| Enterprise Edition Functionality This feature is available in Abiquo Enterprise Edition |
It is possible to attach Virtual Volumes to a Virtual Machine, in order to have persistent storage in an external storage technology. To configure external storage on a Virtual Machine, just select the Storage tab from the virtual Machine edition popup:

| Create Virtual Volumes To attach a volume to a Virtual machine, it has to be created first as explained in the Manage Virtual Storage section. |
The left side panel shows currently attached volumes, and the right panel show volumes that can be attached to the Virtual Machine. Use the
and
buttons from both panels to attach and detach volumes.
| Virtual Volume reservation Once the volumes are attached in the Virtual Machine Edition popup, they are reserved for that Virtual Machine, but not yet attached. This means that the selected volumes will not be able to any other Virtual Machine, but they are still not attached; only are reserved. |
To attach a volume in order to use it in the Virtual Machine, close the Virtual Machine edition popup and select The Virtual Machine. In the bottom part, the details of the Virtual Machine will appear.

In the volumes tab, a list with all reserved volumes will appear and you can attach and detach them from by selecting the desired volumes and clicking the Attach volume and Disconnect volume buttons.
