To be able to use external storage technologies with XenServer, Citrix StorageLink must be installed too. StorageLink is part of the Citrix Essentials for XenServer suite, and comes with XenServer Platinum Edition.

Installing Citrix StorageLink
StorageLink installation consists of the following parts:
- Installation of a License Server. This License Server is a Citrix specific licensing server that will hold all customer licenses. StorageLink connects to this License Server to check customer license details.
- Installation of the StorageLink Gateway. This gateway is a Windows Service that exposes all StorageLink functionallity. Abiquo will access StorageLink Gateway using the SOAP protocol.
- (Optional) Installation of the StorageLink Manager. This is an optional GUI application, but its installation is recommended, since it will be the tool used to enable external storage features in XenServer hypervisor.

Checking StorageLink Gateway permissions
During installation process, an error may appear indicating an error while starting the StorageLink Gateway Service. This error appears because of a wrong configuration of the service permissions. To correct it, go to the Services control panel, and set the StorageLink Gateway Service to use the Local System Account as shown in the following screenshot:
Once the StorageLink Gateway Service is installed, you can verify the connection using the StorageLink Manager.
