Enabling the iSCSI initiator on the host

Log into the VMware Infrastructure Client

Follow the instructions in the order shown in the picture above:

  1. Select your Host or Cluster (depending on your configuration);
  2. Click on the "Configuration" tab;
  3. Click on "Storage Adapters" on the left;
  4. Choose the iSCSI Software Adapter;
  5. Click on "Properties".

Make sure the adapter is enabled.
If not, click "Configure", then click OK.

Enter a name and alias or leave the default ones.
This is going to be your ESX(i) host IQN.
Tick the checkbox to enable the adapter.

Add a volume to the host

There are two ways to add a volume to the host: static discovery and dynamic discovery.

Static Discovery

From the iSCSI Software Adapter properties window (shown above), click on the Static Discovery tab.
Then click the Add button at the bottom of the window.
Complete the dialog below with the server hostname or IP and the target IQN. The port should be the default, which is 3260.

Click OK and close the properties windows.
A message suggesting you rescan all the HBAs appears. Click Yes.

After the rescan you should see your volume(s) in the list of devices.

Dynamic Discovery

From the iSCSI Software Adapter properties window (shown above) click on the Dynamic Discovery tab.
Then click the Add button at the bottom of the window.
Complete the dialog below with the server hostname or IP. The port should be the default, which is 3260.

When you click OK, all the accessible volumes will be automatically added to the static discovery devices list.
Close the properties windows and the same message as before suggesting you rescan all the HBAs appears. Click Yes.

After the rescan you should see your volume(s) in the list of devices.

Check if the hypervisor IQN is in the Netapp Initiator Group

It is essential to confirm that the ESX host IQN is in the initiators group "abiGroup".
In order to verify this, open the Filer WebUI at http://<Filer_IP>/na_admin/.
Then click on FilerView button as show in the picture below.

In the new browser window click on LUNs > Initiator Groups > Manage.

On this page you can verify that the ESX host IQN is in the group called "abiGroup".

If you have previously used the NetApp storage with the ESX host outside of Abiquo, the ESX host's IQN might have been added to another initiator group. You will need to manually remove it from that group before you can use it with Abiquo. You can add it to abiGroup manually or Abiquo will add it automatically.
