This section describes the usability improvements in the current version and minor version upgrades

Improvements in Abiquo 3.2

Create virtual appliance without previously selecting virtual datacenter

Previously it was necessary to select a virtual datacenter, then a create virtual appliance dialog opened with the virtual datacenter selected, and it was not possible to change the selection. This was modified to enable the user to select the virtual datacenter from a pulldown list while they are creating a virtual appliance.

Give feedback to user when they cannot modify IPs in a VM

If a user tried to edit a powered on virtual machine, they could select the network tab and try to drag&drop an available IP but this would not work because the virtual machine was powered on, but no feedback was given and if the user did not realize the reason why drag&drop was not possible, it seemed like it was just failing.

A warning toast message was added

Improve pager

The pager had an unusual appearance and it was uncomfortable to use. It was changed to a more common design.

Improve filling in forms using tab key

This was not working properly and it was uncomfortable for the user not to be able to fill in forms this way.

Change Delete remote service label

On the Edit datacenter dialog, on the Remote services tab, we changed the label “Delete Remove Service” which does not correspond with the action that is currently “Detach Remote Service”

Create instance does not refresh template library

Creating an instance of a powered off virtual machine had poor feedback. The instance was created but the user didn’t know where. Moreover, if it was the first instance, the template should have been refreshed with the “M” symbol to indicate that it had instances but it was not.

Import action was a bit confusing in the apps library

Select a public cloud region in the Apps library, search templates and import some of the given list of templates. Templates which were being imported disappeared from screen when added to the local Apps library because the remote search filter was still active.

Now templates that are being imported do not disappear and they are shaded with a different color to show they are being imported. We expect to make larger-scale improvements to the search and import functionality in an up coming release.

Firewalls were not shown after creation

After creating a firewall it was not shown because the dropdown was not filtering by any location. So the user was creating it but couldn’t see it, so it was a case of poor feedback.

This was changed by filtering by the location where firewall was created.

Logs link to saved error messages

At some point you may see a warning "toast" message in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. This message will popup and stay on screen until it is clicked or for a few seconds only.

To review the toast messages that have appeared in the UI during the current session, click the Logs link on the bottom right-hand side of the screen.

A popup will open with recent error messages. As shown in the following detailed view, the popup has the date, time, code and message for each error. You can copy error message text from this popup.

Improvements in Abiquo 3.2.1

In Abiquo 3.2.1 the user interface has separate tabs for public cloud and private cloud in the Infrastructure view and in the Apps library view. The user interface of the appliance library in public cloud has been streamlined.

Infrastructure view

In previous versions, in Infrastructure view, the datacenters and public cloud regions were managed on a single Datacenters tab. They have now been separated into two tabs for Datacenters and Public cloud regions.

The user interface flow for creating a datacenter and public cloud region has therefore been streamlined. Click the + button and the Create popup will open directly.

Apps library view

The Apps library view has been divided into two tabs for Private and Public cloud.

The Apps library flow for working with public cloud templates has been changed and this section contains a full description of the functionality.

Filter templates in public cloud

Filter local public cloud templates

A public cloud template library may have many thousands of templates, for example, the AWS template library contains approximately 19,000 virtual machine templates. Templates belong to regions, so a similar template may have different IDs in different regions.

Local templates are registered in the Abiquo template cache. These are the templates users can deploy.

You can filter to find the templates you want to work with. To open the filter, click the funnel Filter button.

Enter filter values and click Accept.

Import a template from public cloud

To import a template from a public cloud region into the Abiquo template cache, open the Apps library at the Public cloud tab.

Then click the Import template button on the upper right-hand side of the screen.

The Import template popup will open.

Then click Search to perform the search. The search can take some time and return several pages of templates.

To see more details of a template, move the mouse over it to display a tooltip with template details.

To import a template, click the Import symbol in the top right-hand corner of the template.

When a template has been imported, the color of the Import symbol will change to gray. You can import many templates in one session.

When you have finished importing templates click Close.

Improvements in 3.2.2

Documentation button

There is an optional Documentation button in the top menu bar, in addition to the Documentation link, which is in the links area at the bottom of the screen.

The Documentation button and Documentation link are both linked to the documentation URL. You can set this URL through the UI in Configuration view (or using the API with the SystemPropertyResource) for the "client.dashboard.abiquoURL" property.

To stop Abiquo from displaying the button and the link, remove the documentation URL.

Event time in browser locale format and local time

Previously event times and dates were recorded and displayed in UTC only.  Now Abiquo translates API timestamps to local time and browser locale datetime format.

Add a layer button

Previously users could add an anti-affinity layer to a virtual appliance by clicking the Add layer icon, next to the Create instance button. This icon has now been changed to a button with the text "Add a layer", which is clearer for end users.

You can customize this button text by adding or changing the custom text in the UI labels file: lang_xx_XX_custom.json. Note that this custom text is used for the button and the button tool tip. For example, to change the text to "Create layer".

"virtualappliance.button.createlayer.tooltip": "Create layer",

UI server changes

In Abiquo 3.2.2 and above, you can now run the Abiquo UI server without an Internet connection. Previously the UI server required access to the Google Maps libraries.

Now you can choose whether to enable Google Maps or not. If Google Maps is not enabled, there are some changes to the view.

Mandatory Google Maps client properties

In Abiquo 3.2.2 there are two new client configuration properties related to Google maps. These properties are mandatory in the client-config.json file.

You must add the following Google maps properties when upgrading to Abiquo 3.2.2 or the UI will not function properly. Remember to check your JSON file format: you must add a comma after each property, except for the last one. If you make an error in the file format, the UI will not load.

Edit /var/www/html/ui/config/client-config.json. Go to the section where the other client.google properties can be found.

To enable Google Maps, set the enabled property to true. Include your Google Maps API key if required: see How to Obtain and Install a Google Maps API Key.

    ...
	"client.google.maps.enabled": true,
    "client.google.maps.key": "",
	...

A sample configuration file with these properties included is available on the Abiquo Server at the following location

 /var/www/html/ui/config/client-config.json.rpmnew

Infrastructure view changes when Google Maps is disabled

If Google Maps is not enabled, the Infrastructure view will show the Statistics view for all datacenters instead of the Map view.

Screenshot: In Abiquo 3.2.2, when Google Maps are not enabled, the Statistics view is shown

Minor known usability issue when Google Maps is not used

Clicking on a Datacenter on the Datacenters list will open the datacenter statistics. This is a different result from that of clicking on a Datacenter when the map is present, which opens the Datacenter details view.

To open the Datacenter details view, click on the Details icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Your selection will be saved, so in future, you will see the details view when clicking on a datacenter, until you click on the statistics view.

Screenshot: When Google maps is disabled and you click on a datacenter in the Datacenters list, the datacenter Statistics view is shown.

Screenshot: Select the datacenter Details view icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Abiquo will save your selected view and the next time you click on a Datacenter, you will see the Details view.

Improvements in 3.2.4

In Abiquo 3.2.4 there is a new client configuration property to control the display of the password recovery link on the login screen. This property is mandatory in the client-config.json file.

You must add the following client reset password link property to Abiquo 3.2.4 or the UI will not function properly. Remember to check your JSON file format: you must add a comma after each property, except for the last one. If you make an error in the file format, the UI will not load.

Edit /var/www/html/ui/config/client-config.json. Go to the section where the other client properties can be found.

To hide the reset password link, set the property to false.

    ...
	"client.password.recovery": false,
	...

A sample configuration file with these properties included is available on the Abiquo Server at the following location

 /var/www/html/ui/config/client-config.json.rpmnew
