Introduction to Template Categories

In the appliance library, virtual machine templates can be classified into logical groups called categories. In Abiquo there are two types of categories: local categories and global categories.

  • Local categories:
    • belong to one enterprise only
    • cannot be seen or used by other enterprises
    • can be managed with the Manage VM template categories privilege
  • Global categories:
    • are visible to all users
    • are marked with the text (Global Category) in the category list
    • are created when you download an image with a category name that does not exist yet
    • can be managed with the Manage VM template global categories privilege
    • are also called system categories

The image below shows the local category "Enterprise Firewall" selected from a list that also includes several global categories.

You can manage categories using the buttons next to the Category pull-down list. You can create or delete a category.

Tip
titleModify Categories in the API

You can only create or delete categories in the GUI; you cannot modify categories. If you have the "Administer all enterprises" privilege, you can use the API to change a category from local to global if there is no global category with the same name. You cannot move a local category from one enterprise to another or change a category from global to local.

Manage Local Categories

To manage local categories, you must have the Manage VM template categories privilege. By default, the Cloud Admin and Enterprise Admin have this privilege.
